We realise the importance of a smooth transition for children when they enter our school and throughout their school life. Each year is a time of transition for your child and we run a series of programs to support them in settling in and feeling confident about school.
The purpose of primary school is to give every child a foundation of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values for further learning.
At St Kilda Primary School there is a particularly strong emphasis on students achieving high standards in Literacy and Numeracy. To cater for other areas of the curriculum we use an integrated curriculum model. This allows teachers to cater for different learning styles and encourages children to make links in their learning.
Early Years is linked with the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) where ‘Laying the Foundations’ is the level for the Prep to Year 4 classrooms.
St Kilda Primary School’s Middle Years program strongly reflects a range of strategies that promote high level of engagement for students in Years 5 and 6 and encourages a meaningful connection to learning and school.
Curriculum in the Middle Years at Years 5 and 6 is based on developing children’s deeper understandings and successful problem solving skills through the Inquiry Approach to Integrated Curriculum.
At St Kilda Primary all students from Prep to Year 6 participate in our specialist programs. We have specialist teachers for Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Physical Education and Japanese classes.
Three of our four specialist programs are based in King’s Hall in our Arts Building. By physically placing three of our four specialist teachers in the same building we endeavour to support strong connections between Visual Art, Performing Art and Physical Education.
Children have a many interests and we endeavour to provide opportunities for our children to try new things and to explore new activities. We have a range of extra curricular programs within the school which include a sporting focus, such as netball run by our wonderful parents; coaching clinics organised by our PE teacher and supported by our House Captains and tennis lessons. Other extra curricula areas focus on the arts e.g. art programs, drama and the playing of musical instruments such as guitar, flute, clarinet and keyboard. We also have a Chess Club that runs during lunchtime and a Games Club that is run by our wonderful parent community each week for the junior children. Some of the programs involve extra payments and you can find out more details from the office.
St Kilda Primary has a strong Sustainability focus and all classes participate in weekly Sustainability sessions.
Every student at St Kilda Primary has a ‘buddy’ that they are matched up with at the beginning of each year. The Prep children buddy up with Year 5/6, Year 1 with Year 4, and Year 2 children ‘buddy’ with the Year 3. Having a ‘buddy’ means a friend you can call on at school.
Ms Borcek has created an awesome list of educational games available online for students.
